Regal king penguins stand tall and stand out with the brilliant orange markings on their heads and beaks, and the sunset blush atop their white chests. They can top 38 inches (96 cm) and weigh almost 40 pounds (18 kg) . Their large colonies are continuously occupied, since they take 14 to 16 months to fledge a single chick. They don’t build nests, instead maintaining an ‘arm’s length’ territory, and both parents share incubation duties.
