HIGHLIGHT: ERNEST HENRY SHACKLETON. Shackleton is the heroic ideal of an Antarctic explorer, leading three audacious British expeditions including the harrowing 1914-16 Endurance epic in which he traveled hundreds of miles by sea in a small, open boat and crossed mountainous South Georgia Island to secure rescue for his men. He died during an expedition in 1922, and his grave at Grytviken, South Georgia remains a site of pilgrimage for explorers today.
