BRIDGING TWO GREAT CONTINENTS 12 DAYS | MANAUS TO CAPE VERDE | APR 18, 2022 V227 | SEABOURN VENTURE DAY 0 | MANAUS The largest city on the Amazon and the main port for trade between the vast Amazon Basin and the outside world, Manaus is actually located on the Rio Negro, a few miles from where it meets the Rio Solimões to form the Amazon at the famous “Meeting of the Waters.” Here you will embark Seabourn Venture to begin your expedition on the Amazon and beyond. DAY 1 | BOCA DOS BOTOS & PARINTINS The name of Boca dos Botos refers to Botos, the pink dolphins native to this river. Your Expedition Team plans to visit a seasonal “flooded forest,” home to animals such as sloths, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys and colorful birds. Later we stop at this river town on the Amazon, there is a center that illustrates the history of mankind, both indigenous and immigrant, in the Amazonia region. DAY 2 | SANTARÉM Once a center of the rubber boom, Santarém remains an important port on the Amazon River. The protected FLONA national rain forest is nearby and the wetlands of Lago Maicá are teeming with wildlife including toucans, macaws, pink dolphins, howler monkeys, sloths and anacondas. The “Wedding of the Waters” where the dark, leaf-stained Rio Tapajós meets with the soil-rich, ochre Amazon is a prime attraction for visitors. DAY 3 | GUAJARÁ Join the Expedition Teamexploring the tributary Guajará River. At a riverside buffalo farm, learn about the lifestyle of the caboclos who live and work in close association with the river. In the gallery forest, watch for colorful tropical birds, reptiles and mammals that may be in the trees or on the banks. The elusive pink river dolphins frequent this area as well. DAY 4 | MACAPÁ On the north channel of the Amazon, at the river’s broadmouth, Macapá sits smack on the Equator. Hop from the Northern Hemisphere to the Southern at the Marco Zero monument. The villagers of Apa do Curiaú are descended from escaped slaves, with some unique local customs. The Casa de Artesão sells indigenous tribal handcrafts, as well as balatas, unusual ceramics covered in rubber. DAY 5 | ATLANTIC OCEAN After your active days on the Amazon, relax as you cruise northward in the tropical Atlantic Ocean . Your ship’s open decks offer a mix of sun and shade, and the attentive service is everything you’d expect from Seabourn. DAY 6 | DEVIL’S ISLAND ÎLES Originally named Îles du Salut, because they offered respite from the fevered jungles of French Guiana, the three tropical islands popularly known as Devil’s Island , became a notorious penal colony from 1852 to 1953. Stroll Île-Royale’s rim, finding a ruined prison building. It’s a pleasant place with surprisingly abundant wildlife. But the former prisoners could never leave, and that changes everything. DAYS 7-10 | ATLANTIC OCEAN For sheer relaxation and luxurious languor, nothing beats a leisurely ocean crossing. Seabourn Venture offers a variety of enticing activities as you cross from South America to the isolated African Cape Verde Islands. Explore your own mind, body and spirit with Mindful Living sessions as a part of our Spa & Wellness with Dr. Andrew Weil program. Enjoy entertaining and enriching documentaries and presentations in the Discovery Center and learn such skills as celestial and GPS navigation from your ship’s officers and Expedition Team. You are also invited to simply allow yourself to be pampered by your award -winning onboard culinary and hospitality staff. DAYS 11-12 | CAPE VERDE Today, the afternoon sun will show the Cape Verde Islands rising on the eastern horizon and you will arrive in Praia, the capital on the island of Santiago, where you will remain overnight. Cape Verde is a Lusophone nation, speaking Portuguese and sharing an affection for fado music with an African inflection. Nearby Ribeira Grande de Santiago was the first European colonial settlement in the Tropics in 1466. Its pelourinho, or pillory where slaves were sold is a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site. In the morning, you will disembark Seabourn Venture, having followed the path of returning Portuguese explorers from the great Amazon river of the New World to the island outpost of the Old. The largest remaining tropical forest on earth is embroidered with rivers running from slopes at the base of the Andes to the Atlantic and hosts about 30 percent of the known species of life on the planet. Howmany remain unknown is an open question. Its backwaters and flooded forests invite exploration and reward with an astonishing variety of fascinating plants, unique animals and brilliant birds unmatched anywhere else.
